A hive of sensory, explorative STEAM learning activities, our investigative Raised Playhouse brings sand play like no other to the school playground! Benefiting many areas of learning, this fantastic construction play resource develops children’s creativity along with important fine motor skills and hand to eye coordination. Children access the large raised deck via a ladder with supportive handrails and once at the top, they need to interact with their friends in the sandpit. The spacious deck is large enough for teachers to stand and observe the learning taking place. As the children hoist sand up to the raised deck using the rope and pulley materials mover, it moves along the various heights of the construction belt following the marked out arrows, finishing with a sorting shelf that leads to a sand chute in to the pit below. Moving the sand through the various process together helps improve children’s social skills, collaboration and problem-solving skills as they work as a team to complete the process. We have used transparent structures in this design so that children can observe the inner workings of the machinery as the sand travels between each level. There’s an inbuilt construction table for further investigations and two large windows to let plenty of natural light in - these also encourage the children to role-play and give them a clear view out over the playground. The windows can aid mark-making as children take whiteboard markers to the panels, drawing sandy blueprints to support their imaginative games. Learning at height provides plenty of positive outcomes: improving children’s behaviour, increasing self-esteem, developing problem-solving skills and independence. Moreover, the fascinating structure engages children in learning through play, boosting social competence and developing their language skills.
