Preston Grange's Exceptional EYFS Outdoor Area

A reinvigorated EYFS outdoor area for learning and play

After the installation of their amazing Adventure Fitness Package, Preston Grange Primary School, contacted us to breathe new life into their EYFS outdoor area.

Before our development, the space was a plain tarmac area with a few faded playground markings and older spots of surfacing. They wanted to create an area where the children could learn through play, race their bikes and explore their outdoor area throughout all weathers.

As a result, we revitalised the space for child-led learning alongside some of our best early years outdoor equipment.

Explorative, water play space

With learning through play and targeting the curriculum outdoors high on the agenda, our Water Wall with Water Play Package was the ideal addition to the reception children’s playground for  explorative, investigative and collaborative fun.

The young scientists at Preston Grange work in teams to guide water down the wall and across to the table using the channel stands - finding new ways to manipulate the waters route.

Creating their own boats and planes from paper, children can race them down the water wall, pretending their riding down a waterfall, while observing the effects of water on paper.

Accommodating plenty of children, it has created the perfect environment for the children to explore scientific and mathematic concepts (such as gravity and mouth to source) and develop their communication, language and social skills through play!

Imaginative space for expressive arts

Alongside the fabulous new water play space, there was a tired timber box, which was no longer stimulating to the children. Since the timber was in good condition, we opted to revitalise it rather than remove it, saving the school money and time having it removed.

We’ve created an amazing imaginative play space for outdoor performance activities through the addition of our vibrant Saferturf Surfacing!

Loose play resources can be added to the space to inspire children to let their creativity sparkle, forming their own bands, singing, dancing and putting on a magical show for one another - perfect for spoken language, communication and social skill development outdoors!

All-weather surfacing full of life and colour

Every child loves to race bikes, trikes and scooters, so we created a dedicated space for them while promoting understanding of the world development and road safety learning in the playground.

We’ve created a realistic, all-weather roadway in the centre of the playground, featuring line markings and zebra crossings.

Children can learn to stop, look and listen in the playground as they cross the road into the centre of the space – promoting important skills in the playground that children can then transfer into the real world.

Racing their vehicles around the track, the young race car drivers are developing their co-ordination, lower body strength and cardiovascular fitness, too!

We have also transformed the tarmac areas of the playground into an excellent, natural-looking area with our Artificial Grass. The free-draining, impact absorbing, tactile surface ensures the playground can be fully utilised throughout the year, come rain or shine.

The Reception class absolutely love their new outdoor learning environment and have had plenty of hours of learning through play already, with many, many hours to come!
