A Purposeful Free-Flow Play Environment For EYFS

Michael Syddall Church of England Aided Primary School, located in North Yorkshire, contacted us as they wanted to enhance and improve the children’s educational play experience outdoors as well as create a free-flow play environment.

Our North East playground consultant, Greg Gavin, worked closely with the determined primary school to help meet their outdoor development objectives through the installation of playground surfacing, a timber canopy and one of our excellent climbing frames.

Timber Canopy

As the school wanted to enable free flow play to the great outdoors all-year round, we installed an excellent 12m by 4m Timber Canopy outside the classroom doors.

The watertight construction allows the children to access the great outdoors throughout all weathers, whilst they stay dry and shaded. Filled with numerous loose-play resources that no longer have to be packed away at the end of the day, the children are able to play in the fresh-air all year round.

Underneath the canopy, we also included our vibrant Artificial Grass Playground Surfacing to ensure that the children are able to sit comfortably and play. They can use the bright green surfacing as an additional imaginary play resource during games.

Harter Fell Climbing Frame

On the opposite side of the playground, we installed our excellent Harter Fell Climber to extend the physical play opportunities outdoors. The children can climb, step, hang, balance and traverse across the outdoor challenge as they improve their key physical skills outdoors.

As the entire challenge is open-ended, the children are able to develop their climbing confidence as they step onto the logs and jump down - climbing as high as they feel comfortable with. As it is a non-prescriptive challenge, the children can play in any way they like, developing important skills one climb at a time!

To keep the children safe and prevent serious injury, we mirrored the artificial grass on the opposite side of the playground, too!

Next to the climbing frame, there is plenty of surfaced space for the young children to participate in other active games and sporting activities! Football is a favourite as the youngest children practise their sporting skills and play against one another in a small match.

School Playground Surfacing

The children love their new outdoor play area as they participate in free-flow play activities outdoors.

We loved working with Michael Syddall Church of England Aided Primary School to enhance their outdoor area with a selection of EYFS Playground Equipment. If you’d like to improve your school grounds, please feel free to Contact Us. We’d love to help!
